![Common Birds : Is it just me, or do all birders experience the following. "You're walking along on a bird hike, and you hear something you've never heard before. A bird sound you've never heard. You're excited. What could it be?! You wait patiently, then 30 seconds later, you hear it again. But you can't tell where it's coming from, and you can't see anything. You scour the trees, brush, or grass with your optics, . . . but nothing. You listen for minutes, and nothing. It's gone. WHAT WAS IT?! How will you find out?" So that seems to be a regular occurance for me, as I've only been birding for about 9 months, so my ID skills are limited. It's why I prefer to carry a camera instead of binoculars or a scope. So I can go home and ID it later. A pen and notepad are good, but a picture is so much better. *grin*All of the images in this gallery are available for purchase. ![Bald Eagles : The Bald Eagles that you see in this gallery were shot primarily in the Quad Cities area of Iowa/Illinois, and in Marshall County Illinois. If you've never seen bald eagles in the wild, I encourage you to go out in search of them. Watching bald eagles fish is a display of grace in motion. Did you know that bald eagles can swim? A bald eagle can lift about 4lbs, but if the eagle grabs a fish that's to heavy, and the eagle refuses to let go because of hunger, they will get wet and cannot fly. Then then the bald eagle must swim to shore before hypothermia sets in. If you're not familiar with the bald eagle, as you look at my galleries, you might notice that some of the bald eagles don't have white heads or tails. Those bald eagles are juvenille eagles. ![Owls : I think the owl is the most beautiful species in the bird world. The Gods crafted them with beauty, elegance, grace, power, strength, intelligence, and more. History is littered with owl lore that frightens the superstitious mind. The Apache Indians believed that dreaming of an owl meant death was approaching, while in medieval times owls were considered the devils bird because they only hunt at night, when witches and demons scoured the land. (That's why you see owls in Harry Potter BTW.) Personally, I think the owl is a gift from the Goddess to our world. Fear not the owl, for the owl is wise. Learn from the owl.
